FAST good giant KFC has been forced to apologise after it attempted to cash in on public fear sparked by Wednesday's Southeast Asian earthquakes to sell more chicken to its Thai customers.

Two eight-plus magnitude quakes struck off Indonesia's western coast, sparking fears of a repeat of the 2004 tsunami that claimed 230,000 lives - including 8000 in Thailand.

This time, warning systems were in effect, meaning some Thai airports shut and people were rapidly evacuated from coastal areas.

KFC attempted to get in on the action, posting on its Thai Facebook page: "Let's hurry home and follow the earthquake news. And don't forget to order your favorite KFC menu."

The post prompted anger from Thai Facebook users.

The message has since been removed and replaced with an apology expressing "sincere regret" for the "improper" note.

The apology note on the Facebook page also garnered hundreds of comments. Though some were forgiving, others remained critical of what they labeled an "opportunistic" move, The Wall Street Journal reported.
