Japanese Man Holds Guinness Record for Running Like a Monkey
Imagine no more! Kenichi Ito, a 29-year-old Japanese man, has been doing this for close to a decade, earning himself a spot in the Guinness World Records as a result.
When he was younger, his playmates called him “Monkey.” But he said he was never really bothered by all the teasing.
In fact, he likes simians so much that he thought of copying their running style when he found out that these monkeys could run fast.
He started walking around his village on all fours about 8½ years ago and turned his home into an obstacle course to constantly improve his style.
And just like his inspiration, the patas monkey of Africa, he has developed six running styles, from a leisurely slow pace to a full run.
Ito, who doesn’t have a steady job, says he survives on the earnings he gets from his running and part-time jobs. He also trains other people who want to run on all fours.
Ito has high hopes for this activity. He thinks that this will eventually become a sport, that athletes of the future may be running on all fours.
Unfortunately, like any sport, there are also hazards. Ito said, “On the first day [of walking like a primate], a hunter mistook me for a wild boar, and he tried to shoot me.”
